Totally Open Arduino-Compatible Hardware Development

All Wulfden Freeduino kits (RBFK328, BBB, RBBB, DorkBoard) come with an ATMega328P with Arduino Uno bootloader burned in. "Setup" is nothing more than selecting the Uno as the board type. Typical setup for Arduino IDE version 1.0 would be;

  • Open Arduino
  • select for 'board' "Arduino UNO"
  • select for 'serial port' whatever COMport you are hooked to
  • open a sketch
  • select File-->Upload

Rock Bottom Freeduino Kit (RBFK) - This kit is the absolute minimalist implementation of Arduino(tm). It has the plain basics for a beginner wanting to experiment without a big investment, or an old timer wanting to build a basic runtime Arduino board. It consists of

  • either the ATmega328P-20PU (a drop in pin-for-pin replacement for the 168), or the ATmega644P-20PU (the Sanguino chip) with the appropriate DIP socket
  • pushbutton reset switch and 10k pullup resistor
  • 16.0000 MHz crystal and 2 - 20 pf capacitors
  • programming adapter, breadboard, and breadboard power supply show in the above picture ARE NOT INCLUDED and must be purchased separately.
  • Instructions and schematic for assembling a rock bottom Freeduino on a breadboard are here. They can be easily extrapolated for a handwired proto board.
  • You are going to need to download the Arduino software, which is a complete Integrated Development Environment (IDE) written in Java and available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The default resonant element supplied with the RBFK is a 16 MHz crystal with 2 20 pF caps. This is because it lends itself to being easily setup on a breadboard. I will, upon request, substitute a 16 MHz 3 pin ceramic resonator for the crystal and caps. Just put your request into the notes to the seller area on your PayPal order, or in writing on mail orders
